Dragonkind Dragon Types

Last updated: October 9, 2026

Six colors, five tail types, thirty combinations — and more than 135,000 unique Gaelic-style names. Here is what each color is like, and how players actually bond it.

Black

Rarest — requires the random 'follow the shadow' event

The rarest and most selective. Cunning, patient, and utterly unsentimental.

In the books, black dragons hatch once in a century. Known blacks include Tairn and Codagh.

How players bond Black →

Blue

Very rare — random spawn on two reported routes

Cold, powerful, and exacting. Blues test you and remember how you behaved.

Rare in the valley. Appears on the shadow route and, as of early October reports, occasionally in the meadow.

How players bond Blue →

Green

Common bond, deadly scene

Rational and intellectual. Greens respect honesty and punish evasion.

Bonded through the two-greens clearing by committing to one dragon and answering its question honestly.

Red

Common — the most reliable bond

Hot-tempered but fiercely loyal once bonded.

The valley-heart red is the most reliable bond in the game — the route most first-time players should take.

Orange

Uncommon and volatile

Unpredictable. Oranges burn more players at random than any other color.

Bonded in the meadow by absolute certainty — roar back and commit. Identical choices have produced bonds and burns.

Brown

Uncommon

Steady and underestimated. Browns rescue players other dragons reject.

Bonded in the meadow by following with total commitment. Also reported saving players who fail green questions.

The five tail types

Morningstartail

A spiked flail head, like a morningstar mace.

Daggertail

A narrow dagger-point blade.

Swordtail

A long, sweeping blade.

Scorpiontail

A curved venom stinger. Player reports suggest it appears less often.

Clubtail

A heavy, blunt hammer of bone.

Good to know

  • 6 colors × 5 tail types = 30 dragon combinations, with 135,000+ unique Gaelic-style dragon names (per Rebecca Yarros's Instagram replies).
  • Your bond card shows: name, tail type, gender, age (players report 8 to 82+ years), color, and lineage.
  • Gold dragons and feathertails are juvenile stages (like Andarna in the books) and cannot be bonded in the game.
  • Rebecca Yarros has confirmed every color and tail type can appear — but there is no official answer key, and no guaranteed route to any dragon.
  • Community-compiled lineages exist for each color, but they mix book lore with game data — treat them as flavor, not a verified drop pool.
