How to Get a Black Dragon in Dragonkind

Last updated: October 9, 2026

Black dragons are the rarest bond in the game — in the lore, one hatches in a century. There is no guaranteed path, but there is a known door, and it only opens at random. Here is everything players have verified so far, separated from rumor.

Read this first

  • No guaranteed route exists. The r/fourthwing moderators say it plainly: black is luck.
  • Plan in days, not hours — every death costs you about 4 hours.
  • The battery trick (76-90% charge) is an unverified rumor. Same battery, different results.
  • You do not need to enter alone — squadmate runs have bonded black.

The shadow route, step by step

1. Climb the tallest tree

At the forest fork (thorns, smoke to the north), choose to climb. The standard options are descend slowly (two greens) or fast (red at your feet).

2. Roll the third option: "Follow the shadow"

A third treetop option appears at random. This is the only documented door to black and blue dragons. Players report first seeing it anywhere from attempt 16 to never.

3. Meet the blue dragon — and let her go

Hold still, lower your eyes or bow, and do not try to keep her. (Accepting her offer is a valid blue bond, but it ends the black chain.)

4. Bandage the wounded cadet, head south

Mercy here is part of every reported black chain. Skip it and the trail goes cold.

5. Look back toward the sound

The black dragon announces itself behind you. Turn toward it.

6. Meet its eyes — do NOT bow

Three players independently confirmed the final step is direct eye contact. Bowing or looking away ends the run. Even here, burns happen.

Evidence: four player reports of the full chain, three independently confirming the final eye-contact step. Reported black bonds include attempt 26.

Where players disagree

  • Meeting the black is not bonding it. Players have been burned at the final step, and some who hesitated between the blue and the black lost both.
  • Bleeding before the first encounter is claimed by two players whose reports contradict each other. Unverified.
  • Answering within 2 seconds was disproved by the early-October blue bonders, who took longer.

Between attempts

Each death locks you out for about 4 hours. Track the wait so you return the moment the Rotunda countdown clears.
